Renowned London neurosurgeon Michael Joyce teaches a course on the psychology of criminals at the university. In his latest lecture, he explores the topic of crimes committed by individuals who are fully sane and outwardly normal. Without revealing this to his students, the subject of his case study is none other than himself… The film is characterized by unconventional narrative techniques: it unfolds largely retrospectively and, at one point, incorporates a flashback within a flashback. For part of the narrative, we cannot be sure whether what we are watching is the past as it actually happened or Michael’s imagination. James Mason, who was involved in the film from the very beginning, brilliantly played the lead role. His then-wife, Pamela Kellino, co-wrote the screenplay based on a crime story by Jno (John) P. Monaghan and also portrayed the enigmatic femme fatale. (mh)
