This 72-minute adaptation of Chandler’s third Philip Marlowe novel packs in a solid dose of plot twists. At the request of a wealthy widow, Marlowe is called in to investigate the theft of a gold coin. During his investigation, he encounters a colorful array of suspects, ranging from a mentally unstable secretary to a spoiled young son to dangerous gangsters for whom violence and extortion are the order of the day. Three corpses later, it seems that Marlowe has finally gotten to the bottom of the mystery… The film suffers from casting the uncharismatic George Montgomery in the lead role. Visually, however, it is a remarkable work. Director John Brahm and cinematographer Lloyd Ahern succeeded in creating a claustrophobic atmosphere, evoked by the striking (and, due to the wind, often shifting) shadows cast by Venetian blinds and trees, asymmetrical compositions, subjective camera, and the sparing use of close-ups of the grotesque characters’ faces.
