Arnaud’s novel The Wages of Fear and its film adaptation by Henri-Georges Clouzot were so successful that the story has been adapted for film and television several more times. The most recent version, by French director Julien Leclercq, was released on Netflix in 2024 and received almost exclusively negative reviews. William Friedkin handled the subject matter considerably better, although his version was only appreciated in retrospect. At the time of its 1977 premiere, the film – somewhat inappropriately titled Sorcerer after the name of one of the trucks – was a commercial flop and could not compete with the season’s biggest hits, led by Star Wars: Episode IV – A New Hope and Close Encounters of the Third Kind. Since then, however, fans have come to appreciate it, and some rank it just one spot below Friedkin’s 1970s masterpieces The French Connection (1971) and The Exorcist (1973). (mh)
