Henri Cassin, a leading Parisian detective, arrives in the countryside to take a break from the never-ending hustle and bustle of his work. He stays at the Michaud family’s guesthouse, where he falls in love at first sight with the beautiful Nanette, who is many years his junior. She returns Cassin’s feelings and sees their relationship as an opportunity to break free from the rural routine. The problem is that she has been promised since childhood to a local farmer Leon, who has no intention of giving her up. But the real complications arise only when Nanette and Leon are found dead… Those who watch until the end will be rewarded with a surprising twist. Like all of Lewis’s noirs, So Dark the Night stands out for its sophisticated visual style. It’s remarkable how successfully the director managed to evoke the French countryside under limited conditions. Naturally, Lewis’s signature long takes, double framing, and shooting through various objects are all present. (mh)
