One of Joseph H. Lewis’s earliest career successes was this Gothic thriller based on the novel The Woman in Red by British author Lucy Beatrice Malleson, who wrote under the male pseudonym Anthony Gilbert. Julia Ross, who is unemployed, accepts an offer to become the live-in secretary of a wealthy widow who lives with her servants in a secluded mansion in Cornwall. But she soon discovers that her employer has sinister plans for her involving her violent son. Lewis already had about two dozen B-movies under his belt, and although My Name Is Julia Ross belongs to the same production category, he had a slightly larger budget at his disposal during filming and, for the first time, a first-rate cast (Nina Foch, May Whitty, George Macready). The result is an impressive noir in which Lewis was able to fully test for the first time the techniques (handheld camera, shooting through foreground objects) that he would perfect in his subsequent films.
