Marlowe, based on Raymond Chandler’s 1949 novel The Little Sister, is one of the films that, at the turn of the 1960s and 1970s, heralded the renaissance of film noir and its transformation into a post-classical variant often referred to as neo-noir. Of the several incarnations of Philip Marlowe during this period, the one portrayed by the charismatic actor James Garner is perhaps the most faithful to Chandler’s original, even though the plot was updated to correspond with the time the film was made. Geoffrey O’Brien described this version of the famous private eye as an “unmistakably chivalrous, quixotic figure who is also disillusioned and increasingly bitter.” He is “a man who perceives his own goodness as useless, and who is most himself when the heroism wears thin.” The film was directed by Paul Bogart, who, however, was not related in any way to the more famous Humphrey.
