The British film Hell Drivers is set in the macho world of a hauling company, where truck crews are pressured to drive recklessly in order to meet strict quotas. Tom, an ex-convict, joins the company, desperately seeking a peaceful place to make a living. Instead, however, he develops a rivalry with foreman Red, who takes risks day after day to outdo his colleagues. The film was directed by American Cy Endfield (e.g., The Sound of Fury), who, like some others, left Hollywood following the blacklist and found refuge in the British film industry. Hell Drivers features many adrenaline-fueled scenes, matched by the intense performances of the lead actors, Stanley Baker and Patrick McGoohan. The supporting cast is also noteworthy, featuring Peggy Cummins (from Gun Crazy) and a young Sean Connery, five years before his first James Bond film. (mh)
