June 1, 2026, marked the 100th anniversary of the birth of one of the greatest icons of postwar Hollywood, the actress (as well as model and singer) Marilyn Monroe. Although she is best known to the public for her roles in comedies and musicals (Gentlemen Prefer Blondes, How to Marry a Millionaire, The Seven Year Itch, Some Like It Hot), during her short career she also starred in several darker dramatic films, many of which (The Asphalt Jungle, Clash by Night, Niagara) have been screened at the NFF in the past. To commemorate the actress’s anniversary, we are bringing back the film Don’t Bother to Knock, in which she portrayed one of her most complex characters: a mentally unstable woman entrusted with the care of a nine-year-old girl at a New York hotel. Produced by Twentieth Century-Fox, the film is based on a novel by Charlotte Armstrong and, alongside MM, also offered interesting acting opportunities for Anne Bancroft and Richard Widmark. (mh)
