Deadline – U.S.A. is based on an original idea by Richard Brooks, who was heavily inspired by his own experiences as a journalist. The protagonist is the veteran editor Ed Hutcheson (Humphrey Bogart), who tries with all his efforts to prevent the sale of his newspaper The Day to a tycoon who plans to close it down immediately. In addition, his reporters are working to expose the criminal activities of the dreaded gangster Rienzi (Martin Gabel), suspected of rigging the election and possibly murdering a young girl. To make matters worse, Hutcheson also faces a personal crisis as he attempts to reconnect with his ex-wife Nora (Kim Hunter). The screenplay deftly juggles all the story lines, which all come down to a single, thrilling climax. The film is notable for its high degree of authenticity, including in dialogue that relies on journalistic jargon.
