Confrontation is an adaptation of the novel The Green-Eyed Monster (1960) published under the pseudonym Patrick Quentin. Adaptations of three of Quentin’s stories were shown by Czechoslovak Television during the so-called normalization period. At the festival, we have previously screened Suspicious Circumstances (1977, dir. Karel Pokorný) and The Man in the Net (1973), which, like Confrontation, was directed by Jiří Sequens, Sr. Both titles are connected by the theme of the shadow of suspicion from which the characters try to step out and defend their innocence. The director of a trading company receives a series of anonymous letters with identical wording: “YOU ARE THE ONLY ONE IN NEW YORK WHO DOESN’T KNOW ABOUT YOUR WIFE.” He begins to suspect his beautiful young wife, who is behaving rather strangely, of infidelity. It doesn’t take too long before tragedy strikes.
