A veteran journalist Ed Adams (Alan Ladd) is brought to an apartment building on Chicago’s South Side where, coincidentally, a young woman is found dead at the same moment. Adams picks up her address book and, without telling the police, begins to use it to dig into the girl’s past. In a series of interviews and flashbacks, her complicated fate is subsequently revealed to us. The more the protagonist discovers, the deeper he becomes fascinated by a person he has never met… Chicago Deadline combines motifs familiar from more famous noirs, such as Laura (an obsession with a – sometimes only apparently – dead woman), The Killers (a fragmented narrative pieced together from the testimony of multiple people), and Ace in the Hole (a sometimes fanatical journalist whose actions obstruct an official police investigation).
