Noir Film Festival se dlouhodobě snaží ukázat, že vedle Spojených států amerických film noir se svými archetypálními postavami, temným vizuálním stylem a existenciálním náhledem na svět zapustil kořeny i v řadě dalších zemí po celém světě. Poté, co jsme obkroužili zeměkouli a udělali zastávky v Evropě, Latinské Americe a Asii, se vracíme na místo, kde vzhledem k historicky silné tradici detektivek a kriminálních příběhů máme možná největší dluh – do Spojeného království. Sekce zaměřená na britský příspěvek noirové estetice prokáže vysokou řemeslnou úroveň i vynalézavost tamní kinematografie. Plynové lampy (Gaslight, 1940) podle divadelní hry Patricka Hamiltona si v ničem nezadají se slavnější hollywoodskou adaptací téže látky z roku 1944 a nabídnou atmosférickou podívanou z viktoriánské Anglie se skvělým Antonem Walbrookem v hlavní roli. Posedlost (Obsession, 1949) režírovaná Američanem Edwardem Dmytrykem je pozoruhodnou psychologickou studií o patologické fixaci a pomstě. Nejmladší film z kolekce Pronásledovaný (Hunted, 1952) přináší variaci na oblíbený motiv postav na útěku před zákonem a minulostí a skvělý herecký výkon Dirka Bogarda v jeho průlomové roli. Další dva tituly ještě čekají na odtajnění. Je nám velkou ctí, že záštitu nad festivalem pro letošek přijal britský velvyslanec v ČR Matt Field. (mh)

The Noir Film Festival has long sought to demonstrate that alongside the US, film noir with its archetypal characters, dark visual style and existential outlook on life has also taken root in a number of other countries around the world. After circling the globe and making stops in Europe, Latin America and Asia, we return to a place where, given the historically strong tradition of detective stories and crime narratives, we have perhaps the greatest debt – the United Kingdom. The section focusing on British contributions to the noir aesthetic will demonstrate the high level of craftsmanship as well as ingenuity of the local film industry. Gaslight (1940), based on Patrick Hamilton’s 1938 play, is every bit as good and suspenseful as the more famous Hollywood adaptation of the same material from 1944, and offers an atmospheric glimpse into Victorian England with the brilliant Anton Walbrook in the lead role. Obsession (1949), directed by American Edward Dmytryk, is a notable psychological study of pathological fixation and revenge. The latest film in the collection, The Hunted (1952), presents a variation on the popular theme of characters on the run from the law and their past, and features a brilliant performance by Dirk Bogarde in his breakthrough role. Two more titles are still to be announced. We are honored that the British Ambassador to the Czech Republic, Matt Field, has agreed to lend his patronage to this year’s festival. (mh)

Several directors could compete for the unofficial title of “the king of B‑movies,” but one of the strongest contenders – alongside Edgar G. Ulmer, featured at NFF 2022 – is certainly Joseph H. Lewis (1907–2000). Born in New York to a family of Jewish immigrants from Russia, Lewis entered the film industry before turning thirty and first distinguished himself as a director of low-budget Westerns. His penchant for unconventional compositional strategies earned him the nickname “Wagon-Wheel Joe,” a reference to his frequent use of wheels as striking visual motifs. Although he gradually explored a wide spectrum of genres, Lewis left his most enduring imprint on film noir, to which he devoted himself between 1945 and 1955. Like Ulmer, he navigated the financial limitations of B‑movie production with remarkable ingenuity. His noir films are marked by inventive approaches to conventional scenarios, particularly through their preference for long takes with a moving camera and unorthodox, often high‑contrast lighting schemes. The NFF 2026 will honor Lewis with a curated retrospective featuring canonical works Gun Crazy (1949) and The Big Combo (1955). These will be complemented by lesser‑known titles, the first of which we are pleased to reveal: A Lady Without a Passport (1950), starring Hedy Lamarr in the title role. (mh)

O neoficiální titul „krále béčkového filmu“ by mohlo soupeřit vice režisérů, ale jedním z nejžhavějších adeptů na vítezství by jistě – vedle Edgara G. Ulmera, připomenutého na NFF 2022 – byl Joseph H. Lewis (1907–2000). Lewis se narodil v New Yorku do rodiny židovských přistěhovalců z Ruska. Před třicátými narozeninami se dostal k filmu a zprvu se profiloval jako režisér nízkonákladových westernů. Jeho preference netradičních kompozičních řešení mu vysloužila přezdívku „Wagon-Wheel Joe“ (protože často používal kola dostavníků jako výrazný vizuální prvek). Ačkoliv postupně vyzkoušel pestrou paletu žánrů, historicky nejvýraznější zápis zanechal ve filmu noir, jemuž se s přestávkami věnoval mezi lety 1945 a 1955. Podobně jako Ulmer dokázal i Lewis elegantně překonat finanční omezeni béčkové produkce a jeho noiry se vyznačuji nápaditými řešeními konvenčních situací. Zejména pak vynikají upřednostněním dlouhých záběrů pohyblivou kamerou a netradičních osvětlovacích schémat, často využívajících vysoký kontrast. NFF 2026 Lewise připomene skrze výběrovou retrospektivu, v níž nebudou chybět kanonické filmy Blázni do zbraní (Gun Crazy, 1949) a Velká kombinace (The Big Combo, 1955). Doplní je méně známé tituly, z nichž jako první odhalujeme Dámu bez dokladů (A Lady Without Passport, 1950), kde titulní roli ztvárnila Hedy Lamarr. (mh)

*First and final screenings: August 19 at 3:00 p.m. – first screening (Gothic castle kitchen), August 22 at 8:30 p.m. – official closing of the festival (upper courtyard of the castle).

*Number of halls and courtyards: 4 halls and 2 courtyards within the castle grounds and the Sokol Cinema in the town below the castle; members of the newly founded “Film Noir Club 2013” will have access for the first time to a club hall with a capacity of 28 seats.

*Release of the complete program: June 22 (eight program sections again).

*Accompanying program: two concerts, four musical introductions before the main evening screenings, a lecture on a selected program section, and live readings from a book by R. Chandler.

*Start of sales for basic festival passes (Full Festival, Weekend, and One-Day Passes) and remaining Noir Passes: starting April 1 via the “Noir Reservation System” – https://www.noirfilmfestival.cz/cz/noir-rezervacni-system/. The system will go live on April 1.

*Sales of individual tickets begin: June 22 (for holders of certain festival passes), otherwise July 7 (for those without festival passes).
